Project Seagull

The Idea

Project Seagull offers free experiences to immigrants, migrants and refugees aged 16-18 in arts, theatre, sport and adventure in and around Brighton and Hove.

Detachment

Project Seagull identified the immense challenge faced by some migrants entering the UK fleeing disaster. The separation they experience from family and friends leads to isolation and distress.

Why?

Experiences

Despite Brighton’s incredibly inclusive environment, Project Seagull understood the growing need for a project that connects young migrants with the wonderful and creative aspects of Brighton and Hove.

Integration

Project Seagull felt that the issue of isolation was being exasperated by growing discourse from politicians and the media who ostracise migrants.

“After hearing about The Charity Den, it became apparent for both of us that we wanted to create a project that would advocate for real change within our city.

We both felt strongly about the issue of negative discourse towards migrants and immigration in the UK. We began thinking about how isolated one would feel and immediately knew we wanted to create a scheme that prevented these young individuals from feeling separated.

After conducting interviews and a large extent of research, the issue of isolation and detachment between refugees and their new community was very apparent.

We wanted to channel this desire for integration through our local area with a project that engaged people in the culture of Brighton and Hove and its incredibly exciting environment.”

The Story So Far…

Maddy and Matilda did lots of preparation to launch Project Seagull.

So far they have reached out to numerous charities and entertainment spaces in Brighton and Hove,

They have also begun their promotional campaign, creating a logo and a poster with a local graphic designer as well as creating an instagram page and a sign up form! These posters have been displayed around Bhasvic College, which you can see here.
