LAET Got Inspired
The Idea
LAET Got Inspired was a night of music and socialising between young and old to foster inter-generational bonds through music.
A Push for Intergenerational Connections
Care
Driven by a sense of duty and care to the older generation, LAET Got Inspired served a dual purpose. Not only did it use music as a means of forming intergenerational bonds, but also raised money for Sanctuary Care.
Why?
Confidence
One of the themes of the event was to inspire and empower young people to have the confidence to perform. They also hoped to inspire young people to get out and do things to help the elderly in our society.
Connection
Inspired by their shared belief in the universal power of music to bring people together, they organised a music event that welcomed elderly residents to their school sparking connections between young and old.
During one of my care home volunteering experiences, I shadowed a care home activities week manager and once a week they held music events with residents who had dementia. I thought it was nice that despite dementia being a syndrome that affects memories, the residents managed to remember the songs during the sessions. This was probably in part due to the regularity of these sessions and because they were happily dancing or singing along.
As someone who's grown up with a lot of church, gospel, and classical, I think a common misconception amongst the younger generation is that we have different music tastes to the older generation. In reality we have more similarities than differences. So it was really important for us to try and close that information gap through a really fun event.
